Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

In the first chapter of the Bible, Genesis 1:27 says "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them." If God doesn't have a feminine side,...

Re: Origin and Evolution of Satan (hell, angels, etc) from all points of vi

Historically, the transformation of Satan from the earlier Hebrew texts to the later ones and the New Testament ones seem to have been related to their exposure to Zoroastrianism during the Second...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

I thought your problem with religion was based on the religion you grew up with. Now it seems your defending it. I don't get it.

Not true. Orthodoxy is highly symbolic. Here are examples...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

That seems like a non-sequitur argument my friend. In fairness I suppose I didn't make clear how my previous post is relevant to the discussion of the topic of this thread. I see it as relevant in...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

Consider this:

Imagine you were alive thirty thousand years ago and had a vision of all that was to come: symbolic language, naming and labeling the world; agriculture, the domestication of the...

Re: The Trinity Thread (To be a merged thread)

I would argue that, the New Testament story that Jesus as the Christ ascended to heaven and is seated at the right hand of God, taken by itself, symbolically represents his deification. So, while...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

The use of symbolism has a long and ancient history. What makes you think the biblical writers weren't using symbolism in the first place?

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

Not true. It is a traditional way of reading the Bible that goes back at least as far as Philo who was a contemporary of Jesus and has been practiced by many Christian theologians including Origen...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

No. I was interpreting the Ascension according to the biblical cosmology. You seem to be thinking in terms of the modern scientific cosmology. The ancient writers didn't have access to that. Their...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

I was attempting a symbolic reading of the event. Obviously the New Testament writers weren't thinking of things according to the modern cosmology. In Romans 8:38 Paul refers to principalities and...

Re: POLL: What is the Greatest Error of WL & LC?

I agree that WL's biggest error was his MOTA doctrine and the authoritarian structure and practices that flowed from that. Item 9. "Central control while preaching local autonomy" flowed from the...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

Here's in an alternative symbolic view. According to the traditional view of reality there is a hidden world behind the world of appearance. So in the story of Christ's Ascension he disappears into a...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

I'm not sure what you mean by saying the writers of the Bible were few and far between. They may have been more sophisticated than you give them credit for.

To say that a father in ancient...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

That's how the Ascension appears from a modern materialistic perspective. Of course it appears absurd from that point of view. The Bible was written from a spiritual perspective. it makes more sense...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

Do you suppose that the scriptures literally mean that God is male? Have you considered the possibility that the writers of the Bible understood and were using analogic theological language?

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

The biblical cosmology is not the same is it the modern scientific one. Conflating the biblical cosmology with the modern scientific one has resulted in much confusion.

Re: Things Learned from LGBTQ+ Discussions

Right. We shouldn't let that interfere with possible rapprochement among the brethren (sisters included). The presence of Jesus being a symbol of possible unity in the truth here.

Re: Things Learned from LGBTQ+ Discussions

I suppose we shouldn't let the likelihood that this saying is misattributed to Lao Tsu stand in the way of potential dialogic rapprochement.

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

Viewing Bible heroes as examples is fine as far as it goes. But it strips them out of the biblical cosmology, the narrative context in which they act. Their heroism may or may not make any sense in a...

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

The Bible makes people Bible-crazy. You know that. Or at least a guy I know has been telling me that for years like a broken record.

Re: Origins of Christian God- Through Cultural, Historical, Anthropology le

Another reason why if you look at it only as a literal historical document and makes no sense. So where are you going to go for your morality and ethics?
