If you extend the wall 10 miles on either side of the major cities you could force illegals to walk for 4 or 5 hours before getting to a road. As for tunnels you can easily detect them using local seismographs. Since it probably takes weeks to build a tunnel it would be a simple matter to identify the location, put it under surveillance and arrest the entire ring.
Using Drones, seismographs and strategic extensions to the wall it could be done efficiently and effectively.

The complaint that the "wall won't stop everyone" is completely bogus.
That's like saying a deadbolt and security system can't stop every thief.
The point of security is to make it so difficult that the thief goes elsewhere.
