I like what Calvin wrote. What does he mean by "peculiar quality?"

Personally, I never saw this verse as a contradiction. The word "but" is added, or one could translate "only" one God. You really need the context here. In verse 5, Paul seems to be referencing Corinthian sayings about sacrificing foods to many gods and many lords in their idol temples, and provides contrast in what we believe. Read in context here:
